Authors rules
The Editorial board of Ukrainskiy Biokhimichny Zhurnal (Ukrainian Biochemical Journal) takes to press original experimental works in different fields of biochemistry: investigation of metabolism; biochemical mechanisms of intracellular signalization and regulation of metabolic processes; study of the structure and properties of complex protein and supramolecular systems; detection of physico-chemical regularities of enzymatic catalysis, membrane transportation, etc.; creation of mathematical models of biochemical processes: study of the effect of pharmacologic preparations on metabolism; methodical works with a description of new or improved methods of biochemical investigations, as well as the surveys of the most urgent problems in biochemistry, works in the history of biochemical science which elucidate the evolution of ideas, formation and development of scientific schools, present creative portraits of researchers; the discussion papers; reviews of journal publications and new books; news items. Ukrainskiy Biokhimichny Zhurnal also publishes the works from various sections of relative sciences, that is: molecular biology, bioorganic chemistry, biophysics, microbiology, plant physiology and biochemistry, medical biochemistry, pharmacology, genetics and biotechnology, where biochemical methods of investigation were used.
The papers are published in the journal in Ukrainian, Russian or English.
All the papers are necessarily reviewed by the leading experts in the corresponding fields of biochemistry; the experts are appointed by the scientific editor of the journal. The paper manuscript is submitted in duplicate (including figures) as well as on a floppy 3,5""(Word, rtf format, Times New Roman types). The paper size in pages should not exceed 20 (40000 characters), that of the survey 30 (60000 characters) pages, printed out (type size 14, tables –– type size 10; line spacing 5 mm) or typed (at double line spacing, 28-30 lines on a page, 60 characters in a line), including references, tables and figures. Figures should also be submitted on a floppy, in tiff, bmp, wmf, gif, jpg, eps format. A summary (about 2/3 of a page) and key words in English as well as summaries and key words in Russian and Ukrainian for the paper written in the Russian or Ukrainian languages, respectively.
UDC (Universal Decimal Classification) is in the upper – left corner of the first page, then follows the paper title, author’s (authors’) surname(s) and initials, the institution where the work has been done, e-mail, a brief abstract which follows from the work objective and its results, key words (about 10 words) which were a basis for including the paper in a certain section of abstract journals. They should also be mentioned in the paper title and abstract.
The paper begins with the brief history of the problem with reference to sources. The research objective is to be substantiated there.
The section Materials and Methods is to be presented in such a way, that the experiment could be repeated following the description. Generally known methods may be referred only. Names of companies-producers of the reagents and materials used in the experiments with reference to the country are to be indicated. The author(s) should define the number and species of the used animals as well the methods of anaesthetization and euthanasia.
All the designations and denominations of physical and chemical units of measurement should be given in SI system. Aminoacids are designated by three Latin letters.
The names of enzymes being used in the work, the author(s) should give the recommended or systematic name of the enzyme and its cypher, following recommendations of International Biochemical Society (Enzyme Nomenclature Acad. Press. San Diego. New York, 1992).
The enzyme activity should be expressed through the rate of the reaction catalyzed by it under certain conditions (temperature, medium pH, substrate concentration, etc.). The reaction rate unit ensuring the transition to SI system, – catal (cat., in brief) – is 1 mole of the transformed substrate or 1 mole of the formed product per second. However, catal is not widely used in the enzymology practice. Enzymatic activity is mostly expressed in standard units of enzyme activity E or U that equals the number of µM of the transformed substrate per 1 min under standard conditions. Enzymatic activity may be expressed through specific activity of the enzyme in µM. (nM, pM)ו (min× mg of protein)-1. Beside, the molar activity of the enzyme is sometimes defined that is expressed through the number of catals per 1 mole of the enzyme, or through the number of substrate moles (equivalents of the groups taking part in the reaction), transformed by one mole of the enzyme for one minute under certain conditions.
If particular organisms (animals, plants, microorganisms) used in the research are mentioned for the first time, their full species name in Latin should be given in the paper text, following modern taxonomy; under the second mentioning of the organism its genus name may be denominated by one letter.
The discussion of the obtained results should be limited by consideration of the most important facts in the section Results and Discussion, allowing for the available data in those problems, without repeating the table data.
No word abbreviations, except for generally known ones, should be given in Tables (with rare exception and obligatory interpretation in notes). Digital data should be rounded off according to set up regulations with allowance for mean error. The probability of indices distinctions should be substantiated by statistical analysis. One should not present the same results in the Tables and Figures. All the table columns should be named and filled with the corresponding data.
The upper part of microphotographs should be indicated. Marginal notes should be made in front of figures and tables.
Chemical and mathematical formulae are printed in Latin or inscribed manually using black ink or paste. Capital letters are underscribed twice, e.g., CVP, and small ones overscribed twice, e.g., c, v, p; upper and lower indices – are noted by brackets Ca2+, H2O, Km), Greek letters should be circumscribed with red color. It is also necessary to make marginal note against letter I, Arabic and Roman units (1 and I, letter O and zero 0).
Tables, figures with legends, English summaries should be made on separate pages. Besides the paper title, abstract, and key words, the authors’ names and initials, official names of the institutions, where the work has been made, should be given in English. All pages are to be enumerated.
References are composed by the order of citing sources in the text (they are denominated by digits in square brackets) and are given at the paper end. References are given in the original language without titles of journal papers, but with indicating the volume, periodical issue and page. The titles of books (monographs, collected works, etc.) theses should be presented. One cannot refer to non-published materials. The number of authors being three or four, all of them are indicated in references, if there are five or more authors, only three names are given with following et al. Works of the recent years should prevail in references (no more than 20 in experimental paper, – 100, in the survey).
